For Sentimental Songs

homeisalabor

Above is a picture I edited of me and my sister when we were young in the backyard of the home we grew up in. I am dedicating this week’s playlist to my crazy-loved sister, Gillian, because I know she can relate similarly to the idea of home and all it represents in our lives and our loves. We have transitioned through many seasons and have, in many ways, grown distant from our child-selves. Distance and loss are always difficult but necessary parts of growing up. But life follows from being uprooted, being carried by the winds in our lives, being planted and replanted, taking root, pushing through ground. Love exists even in labor and healing comes from fire. Life as the kaleidoscopic whirlwind of changing seasons can easily leave one feeling weary and shaken. Our power is choice. We can choose to say “yes” or “no.” We can choose to settle in or hold out. We choose to dig our heels in or push off from the Earth under our feet. We choose what crown we wear.
